Breakdown of the reading programs. My reading group consists of three students who are working on their reading out loud rate per minute and developing a strong vocabulary and site words. The programs that I am using are Corrective Reading: Decoding B1 and Comprehension B1. Decoding B1 continues with phonics and awareness of how letter sounds and combination of letters help to form basic words. It is a scripted program that utilizes the techniques of "I say-you say" and partner reading to promote mastery. The ultimate goal of the program is to transform low readers to fluent readers that can focus on understanding what is read and not on trying to figure out each word and losing track of the meaning of the story. Comprehension B1, used in conjunction with the Decoding series can enhance a student's understanding of basic concepts, analogies, and vocabulary of frequently used words at a fourth to sixth grade reading level. It incorporates many types of selections so that the reader can practice those skills in different areas.
End of the Year I am so proud of my reading group. They moved on to another teacher reading in the next of the intervention series in Corrective Reading: B2 Decoding. B2 continues with the foundation the B1 started. The stories and word usage gets harder as the student progresses. I look forward to next year's reading group that I will have. To take those students who find they will never read at grade level and set goals with them, guide them through the difficult times and see the progress in reading and the desire to want to challenge themselves in reading makes teaching at Lummi worth it.
